Rescued People: A Service of Shadows

Tenebrae, from the Latin word for “shadows,” has been observed by followers of Jesus Christ since the fourth century. The service consists of a series of unannounced readings and reflections. During the service, candles are extinguished with each reading, illustrating the suffering and death of Jesus, the Light of the world, as the room descends into shadows. The diminishing light also symbolizes the sin of the world and the fading devotion of those first disciples. At the end of the service, the Christ candle returns, symbolizing the hope of His promised resurrection.
